INTERVIEW

For those who are not familiar with Honor Society can you give us a little background on how the band came together?
Our keyboardist (Jason) and I met in art class in high school, and after two failed high school bands we decided to team up to form what would eventually become HONOR SOCIETY. We met Andrew Lee (Bass) through a mutual friend a little later and just a couple of months ago we added Alexander (drums) to the line-up after his stint with the Jonas Brothers. But from the beginning our goal was to write credible pop music that drew on all of our inspirations like 80's pop and r&b, rock and today's hip hop.

You've released an EP in 2005, and have recently been working on new material - when can we expect a full length album or a new release?
We're definitely working on it. In our minds 'The Greenlight EP' is dated. That release is what I would call a first draft of our sound, we've gone back since then and dug a lot deeper. There are newer 'demos' on our myspace page which come from a lot of writing we did last year. Those demos were really meant to be for us but people started asking for them so we put them up on the page. But yes we are in the process of trying out some producers for an official Honor Society release.

How would you describe the Honor Society sound?
Short answer: we sound like Prince fronting Fall Out Boy.
Medium answer: we sound like Michael Jackson's "Beat It." A pop/r&b song with a shredding guitar solo.
Long answer: The Honor Society sound is reflective of growing up in the suburbs. Which means it has a lot of elements like rock, hip-hop and pop. The key our sound though is that all the styles in our songs come off seamless. We also always like to tell a story with our lyrics, putting you right there as events are happening.

How would you convince someone who hasn't heard of you or your music to go to a show or listen to your CD?
We're the real deal. We can pull off the music like what you would hear from a Justin Timberlake record, but we're playing all the instruments.

What sets Honor Society apart from other bands that are out there today?
Musicianship definitely, we're not music geeks, but we know what we're doing, we took the time when we were young to learn our instrument and learn how to sing. So many bands today sound dissapointing live and we take pride in being the opposite.

Can you describe your stage show in one word?
Electric (in an ANCHORMAN Ron Burgundy accent)

Out of all of the shows you've played, have there been any favorites? Why?
Probably the shows we play with the band Article A from New Jeresey because we share a lot of the same fan-base so when we play together the crowd is ready for a night of music, not like sometimes when you play in New York City and fans shuffle in and out for the band they're there to see.

Do you have any plans to tour this year?
We're planning to tour this summer. Look out for that.

YouTube, Myspace, Facebook etc is known for creating a buzz and reaching millions. Are you hoping to reach a broader audience using this medium?
Without a doubt. We look at it like a house. The Honor Society house. One room is our myspace page where you get the serious artistic side of the band, the music etc. Another room is our blog, (honorsocieyband.blogspot.com) where people should visit if they want to hear us vent or get exclusives. On our blog is also where you can see "The Gentlemen's Club". If you don't know what that is, go to our blog right now and take a look.

Do you find that being in a band gets you more dates? And do you ever use that to get a date?
Sometimes yes and sometimes no. It brings you attention but girls feel like they can't approach you cause you might be a jerk. Message to the ladies, we're not jerks.

What is one of the most important things you have learned (in the music industry) since starting the band?
Creatively: to know the line of when to dig deeper and challenge yourself and when to know something is done. When you're writing or recording a song, you could sometimes revise it forever. You need to know when you nailed it.
Business: The most important thing I've learned is to trust your gut. It's never wrong.

Do you have any messages for your fans or the general public?
If you live close to one of our shows, COME SEE US. It doesn't matter if you like rock or pop or hip-hop, we will win you over. At this point our live show is the best representation of our music and we want people to experience that.

(from the book of stupid questions)

What breakfast cereal has had the greatest influence on your life?
Enviro-Kidz Peanut Butter Panda Puffs. Because pandas are bears too.

Have you ever wished you were a member of the opposite sex? Why?
Duh, isn't it obvious.
