INTERVIEW

For those who may not know of Savvy, can you give us a brief background on the group?
Savvy was formed in April of 2004. Auditions were held and over 400 kids were auditioned. We had to sing, dance and act during the auditions. They lasted two days. Twenty were selected to come back the second day. Then we were chosen to go through a six week boot camp before the group was finally formed. We ranged in age from 7 – 13. It was wild. The producers wanted to have great music for the “tweens”, so they decided the age range. In September we went to Toronto, Canada and recorded our first CD. In June of 2005 we filmed our video “Every Body Moves” and did our first national mall tour. We’ve done over 400 live concerts and love performing! We feel like we are really living out our dreams! After that first summer we had bonded like a real family and after touring 8 months on the road our second year we became brothers and sisters. Some don’t get it – the multi-culture, multi-racial thing, but we love showing how love is all it takes to get along. Not to say we don’t have our spats like real brothers and sisters, but that is really rare and we talk it out so problems don’t develop. We REALLY have fun together and love working really hard together. What’s great is we all have the same dreams and we won’t let each other down by not doing our best. Also, like in a family, we really depend on each other. Last year we haven’t performed as much because we’ve been devoting ourselves to acting, and filming to take our group to the next level, and we REALLY miss the live concerts and can’t wait to get back on tour.

You all auditioned for the group, what was the audition process like?
It was like 8 hours long the first two days. It was so nerve racking because there were so many cute and talented kids. We didn’t know exactly what the producers were looking for so we just each got out there and did our best to show them our personalities. Then when they called our names, we could see that they were looking to put a group together that every kid could relate to. Then the boot camp was about 6 hours a day singing and dancing. It was so much work, but it was worth it. Once contracts were given in June of 2004, we were so excited. July 1st was our first concert. Through that summer of working 8 hours a day with tumbling classes, vocal, acting, and dance classes we would go home so tired but ready to get up and do it all over it again. Those were the most fun days! We all grew to really get to know each other, the good, the bad, and even the bad hair days…

How would you describe the SAVVY sound?
Wow, Savvy sound has changed as we have grown. On our first CD we sound really great, but really young. We like pop, rock and R&B, but we also had so Latin flavor in “Fiesta Forever”. We LOVE pop/hip hop a lot, because we love to dance. We think that once we get a television show, that the producers will be able to get the best musicians and writers behind us and figure out where our sound should go more precisely. For now, we get song submissions from different genre’s and then all agree what we want to do next. Never boring around Savvy, that’s for sure. We can sing almost any kind of music. Christina just recorded a Spanish version of our new song Angel, that is a pop/dance sound, and it is awesome!

What would you say the message is that you are trying to send through your music?
The importance in our music still lies in messages we want to give out to everyone to follow their dreams, and have fun! We want everyone to know that it’s okay to be exactly who they are, just figure out what you want out of life and go for it! And of course, to love one another! Now that we’re older, our music is aging too, but will still be appropriate for our younger fans too.

You are in the process of recording your second album, when can we expect to see that released?
We are really having a lot of fun with it. Most likely we will finish it this summer and it will be out by Fall.

Doreen Spicer, whom directed your music video for "Lets Go", also worked on a TV Series just for the group. Can you tell us about that?
Wow, she is unbelievably awesome! We ALL LOVE her! She really believes in us and is helping us to get a television series. She’s written a great sitcom script for us, and now two producers are teaming up with her to try to get us a show once the Writer’s strike is over. Doreen wrote and produced the Disney movie, “JUMP IN”, and also she’s Penny Proud. No really, when you see her. she looks just like Penny Proud. That was the first animated series she had on the Disney Channel. We love her. She is so much fun and she loves to laugh with us while we work.

Do you have any plans to tour soon?
Yes, the promotions agency behind the Jonas Brothers has just contacted us and we are in talks to maybe get a summer tour. We love how they have promoted Jonas Brothers, so we are hoping that they can help our group’s promotion too. It’s really hard to get to that national level, but we have fans from our national Radio Disney “Feeling Groovy” tour that have remained faithful, and we are really excited to get out there performing. Hopefully by June we will be on the road again unless we are filming, of course. Everyone needs to write Radio Disney to request that they play our music on the air!

What is next for Savvy in 2008?
TV Series, new CD and national tour. That would be great for 2008!

New Years Resolutions?
Everyone agreed to sing, dance, act, and laugh more! Oh, and Sarah’s saying to eat more cake!

Do you have a message for your fans?
You guys ROCK! We love you and can’t wait to get our new stuff out there for you to enjoy! Thanks for being there for us!
